“Las Vegas” Shout Outs!

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Last Friday on “Las Vegas” while Danny & Delinda were discussing the possibilities of moving in together Mary was off to conquer her biggest fear…stand-up comedy. In real life Nikki Cox, who plays Mary, has been around plenty of stand-up comedy, not only is she currently engaged to Jay Mohr, but she was also in a long term relationship with Bob ‘Bobcat’ Goldthwait. In a shout out to her future husband’s professional & personal life while performing her stand-up on the show she wore an alphabet block bracelet spelled out with the word “Jackson”, her soon-to-be stepson’s name. What a nice way to earn some brownie points! Also, did anyone notice the shout out to “The Office”? Mary mentions to Mike that Dunder-Mufflin just called and that they need to add an additional ballroom for their event. Aww…from one NBC show to another…feel the love.

My Emmys Best and Worst

Monday, August 28th, 2006

While the fashions are unavoidable as part of the night’s discussions, I saw a few other things during the Emmys that I wanted to make note of:

Best Reaction to Losing: Stephen Colbert’s breakdown over being snubbed in favor of Barry Manilow. “I lost to the Copacabana! Singing and dancing is not performing!” That was only trumped by his bitter snarking just before the crocodile tears started to flow. “Hello, godless sodomites” was the opening line of the night.

Worst Attempt to be Funny: Conan O’Brien trying to make an IRS joke. Dude, we got that gift bag schwag routine a week ago in the press. And most of the people who needed to worry about it were already in the wings anyway.

Best Use of Consumer Technology: Using a staged setup of audience members with iPods to show the nominees for Best Variety, Musical or Comedy Program. Okay, it was the only use, but you have to admit it was different.

Worst-Dressed Female: Sorry, setspotter, but I have to give it to Candice Bergen. That belt would set off an airport metal detector at 20 paces.

Best Acceptance Speech: Greg Garcia, writer for My Name Is Earl, turning the entire concept on its head by getting snarky with a previous teacher, an old employer, and the usual spiritual suspect.

Worst-Dressed Male: Simon Cowell. The shirt open down to chest hair look was terrible with wide collars and is simply pathetic with narrow ones. Dick Clark deserved more respect than that attempt at 21st-century lounge lizard. He’d have snarked an American Idol contestant for showing up at an audition in an outfit like that.

Smartest Choice: Victor Garber and Tyra Banks leaving the comedy to the professionals. Garber could do it, but Banks is no actress.

Dumbest Choice: Giving an Emmy to The Amazing Race for the fourth time. On the bright side, we didn’t have to see Simon Cowell again, but Project Runway deserves some love, damn it.

Biggest Snub: Grey’s Anatomy. Eleven nominations, no wins. Somebody feels like The Color Purple right now.

Oddest Product Placement: A Homer Simpson doll visible on the set of The Office during the opening montage. What, no Dwight Schrute bobblehead?
